DEFECTOVISION CT

Non-destructive and contact-free crack detection for components with complex geometries

Reliable testing of complex geometries with induction thermography. Threads, gears, blades and profiles place special demands on crack testing. DEFECTOVISION CT enables automated, contactless and non-destructive testing of electrically conductive materials – from semi-finished products to components with complex geometries. Even small, difficult-to-access or geometrically challenging test areas can be inspected effectively.

The testing principle is based on induction thermography: An induction coil generates eddy currents in the test piece, heating the test area by only a few degrees Celsius within a very short time. Cracks disturb the current flow and create characteristic local temperature increases – known as hotspots. An infrared camera detects the emitted thermal radiation and makes the defects visible.

The thermographic images are analyzed using video and image processing algorithms. The resulting hotspots form a characteristic crack signature, while surface characteristics such as roughness or scratches are not represented in the same way. This makes it possible to reveal cracks that are difficult or even impossible to detect in conventional images.

DEFECTOVISION CT is particularly effective when inspecting components with challenging geometries. Typical applications include gears, cams, forged and sintered parts, welds and turbine blades. Depending on the component, demanding areas such as tooth roots, flanks, end faces or bending edges can also be inspected. This makes the method suitable for a wide range of components and manufacturing processes – from forged and sintered parts to additively manufactured or formed components.
