Fully Automated Eddy Current Crack Testing System for Shock and Strut Rods

Cracks in shock and strut rods can cause chassis failure while driving. A fully automated eddy current system with ROTO-PUSH and STATOGRAPH reliably detects such cracks.

The challenge

Shock absorber and strut rods require flawless surface quality to ensure reliable sealing performance. Even minor defects such as cracks, porosity, lapping or fine scratches can damage seals and cause oil or gas leakage inside the cylinder. This increases warranty costs and may compromise safety-critical suspension functions. Detecting very small surface discontinuities at high production speeds is therefore a key quality requirement.

The solution

FOERSTER’s ROTO-PUSH system combined with STATOGRAPH CM/TCL enables fully automated in-line eddy current testing of rod surfaces. Diameters from 6 to 25 mm and lengths from 60 to 600 mm are inspected at speeds up to 200 mm/s. Integrated demagnetization, precision centering and automatic reference verification ensure stable signal quality and repeatable inspection results in continuous production environments.

The result

Surface defects as small as 20 µm are reliably detected, even on high-quality finishes at maximum line speed. Minimal untested ends and automated sorting into defined quality categories enable near-complete coverage and seamless integration into automotive production lines while maintaining high throughput and inspection consistency.
